Vaccine for Cervical Cancer: get the new vaccine March 31, 2007

Filed under: Women and child health — maldiveshealth @ 10:28 am

Groundsix reports that “The majority of cancers were found to be cervical and breast cancer in women” in Maldives. Now, i  am going to reveal something which can one day save your daughter or loved ones.

Now most of you all might not know, but there is a vaccine available which reduces the probability of getting cervical cancer by many folds. The vacine is given for girls in the age group 12-18. The cause of cervical cancer is mainly due to Human Pappiloma Virus (HPV). It would be great if Maldives considers givng this vaccine to the sexually active group which is 12-18 year age group girls ( boys also ca be given the vaccine), since this virus is manily distributed by unsafe sexual practices. The vaccine is a breakthrough by Australian researchers. You can read more about this very new treatment from here and here.

Smokers have heard all of the reasons for quitting before: smoking increases their risk for lung disease, heart disease and cancer, and the habit will literally take years off their life. But one reason to quit may not be as well known– smokers require special consideration when undergoing anesthesia for a surgical procedure.

Can the US help us March 24, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — maldiveshealth @ 3:56 pm

The US is having one of the biggest debates in reforming their health care policies. What does that have to do with us? Well, we can learn from it. Read about it and hopefully establish a good health care system for us all.

The HEALTH CARE ANSWERS WE NEED raises some good questions even we should ask a potential presidential canditate of ours.

 1. Will the candidate’s plan really cover everyone—with a decent guaranteed level of coverage—at an affordable cost?

2. Does the candidate offer a public plan, like Medicare, that has a predictable, guaranteed level of benefits that “cannot be taken away?”

etc….

Worlds youngest father March 24, 2007

Has anyone watched Geisha? Now i am thinking that i should have. I stumbled across something which raised many questions in my mind. The issue here is age of a “child” and consent and sex. I found what i was reading to be  ridiculous. Any way it seemed that way to me. In Burkina Faso, Argentina, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Syria, the legal age you can have sex is 13. In Canada it is 12. Just read the n0. 2 below about Canadas stance on this. Can you believe it? My eyes became a bit wider while i was reading these figures.

  1. In Brazil, authorities may not choose to prosecute if the younger partner is aged 14 to 17 and does not lodge a complaint.
  2. In Canada, consensual activity with those over 12 may not be an offence if the accused is under 16 and less than two years older than the complainant. The exception is anal intercourse, to which unmarried persons under 18 cannot legally consent according to national law, although provincial laws may vary.
  3. In Finland, sex with someone under 16 is not deemed sexual abuse of a child if “there is no great difference in the ages or the mental and physical maturity of the persons involved.” Similarly in Norway, a prison sentence may not be imposed “if those who have committed the act of indecency are about equal in age and development.” In both countries, lesser punishments may nevertheless be imposed.
  4. In Germany, sexual intercourse is legal from the age of 14 provided the older partner is aged under 18 and provided they are not “exploiting a coercive situation” or offering compensation. In addition, sex between one partner aged 14-15 and another aged under 21 is legal unless the older partner “exploits the victim’s lack of capacity for sexual self-determination”.
  5. The age of sexual consent in Japan is 13 years of age, although prefecture law usually overrides federal law raising the age up to 18.
  6. In Mexico the federal law varies according to the age gap between partners and is often overruled by regional laws.
  7. In Papua New Guinea, anal sex is illegal in all cases. The age of consent for vaginal sex is 16 for females and 14 for males.
  8. Paraguay sets the age of consent at 14 within marriage and 16 outside of marriage.
  9. The age of sexual consent in the Philippines is 12 for all, but contacts with minors (under 1 8) are an offence if the minor consents to the act for money, gain or any other remuneration or as the result of an influence of any adult person.
  10. In Portugal it is illegal to perform vaginal intercourse with a minor between 14 and 16 years old “by taking advantage of their inexperience”.
  11. Although Thailand’s age of consent is usually said to be 15, the laws can be interpreted to allow prosecution for sex with someone under 18.
  12. In some U.S. states a lower age applies when the age gap between partners is small, or when the older partner is below a certain age (usually 18 or 21).

These and more figures from here.
So what constitutes to rape?

What constitutes to  child molestation?

What constitutes to pedophilia?

Is the age 12 too young?

Arent they still babies?

What should be the age gap?

What about the stories in Islam of prophet Mohamed  marrying a 9 year old?

Is that pedophilia?

Child brides in Ivory Coast?

Indian child marriages?

Can a 14 and a 12 year olds marriage be acceptable in a western society?  If them having sex is not a crime, why mariage is? How do they define sex?

Why cant a nine year old consent to sex? What is too young?

Are the children of today growing too early? Too fast?

Are they ready for the act?

What about Lina Medina?

What about the youngest “boy” “man” to “father” a child?

What about cultural, traditional norms?

Where does female circumcision lie in the context of consent issues, sex and a say about their own bodies?

I think i need to read more on this. Thinking of starting with the CANADA’S LEGAL AGE OF CONSENT
TO SEXUAL ACTIVITY

How you can win 3 million dollars March 20, 2007

Filed under: disability, malpractice — maldiveshealth @ 11:46 am

Yes , you may claim for it, fight for it, and even ultimately win 3 million dollars. That is only if you have the guts to fight for the right and a way of enabling a better future of your disabled child who is in that condition due to malpractice.

“These cases of negligence have got to stop happening,”. The High Court heard that Benjamin was taken to the London hospital with respiratory problems in February 2000, when an endotracheal tube was inserted to assist his breathing.

Read the BBC article.

We need to empower people to stand up and say no to the same kind of malpractice issues occuring in Maldives.

Health promotion March 20, 2007

Jakarta Declaration, 1991, p.1 defines health promotion as

It (health promotion) is a process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health. Health promotion, through investments and actions, acts on the determinants of health to create the greatest health gain for people, to contribute significantly to the reduction of inequalities in health, to ensure human rights, and to build social capital. The ultimate goal is to increase health expectancy, and to narrow the gap in health expectancy between countries and groups.
