Maldives conducts first-ever autopsy to examine suspicious death of dissident
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: The Maldives has sanctioned the Muslim nation’s first-ever post mortem examination to examine the suspicious death of an opposition activist who was allegedly beaten to death in custody, officials said.
The body of Hussain Salah, which was found floating in Male harbor last Sunday, was sent to neighboring Sri Lanka on Friday for an autopsy on the request of the deceased man’s relatives, Maldives’ chief government spokesman Mohamed Hussain Shareef said by phone from the capital Male.
Islam requires that a corpse be buried quickly without cutting or disturbing it.
“So far in Maldives, an autopsy has never taken place, partly due to religion — and also there was never such a request,” Shareef said.
The Maldives is a Muslim nation of about 300,000 people on 1,192 coral islands in the Indian Ocean.
“This isn’t without controversy,” Shareef said of the government decision to agree to a post-mortem.
“Already some religious groups and parties have vehemently opposed it,” he said, adding that the government agreed to the family request because it has nothing to hide.
A Sri Lankan foreign ministry official confirmed that the body is in Sri Lanka but declined to give further details.
Mohamed Nasheed, a senior leader of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, said earlier Salah had died in custody and police attempts to bury his body in a hurry were thwarted by protesters including himself.
But the government says that Salah had died 36 hours after being released from police detention over a narcotics charge.
The government identified Salah as a drug addict who had previous convictions on narcotics and burglary charges.

CONFUSION OVER POST MORTEM
The post mortem which was completed today and the report which have been handed over to the Maldives High Commission with strict instructions for the sealed envelope to be opened in the presence of Salah’s family and Maldives Police have been opened without knowledge of the Salah family. The findings were reported by Dr Shaheed who is with Gayoom in Singapore. Speaking from 1560 miles away from Colombo Dr Shaheed say the post mortem has ruled out “violence” as the cause of death. There is a toxicology report waiting to find the exact time of death.
People are already asking for an explanation on the marks found on his legs and face. As the family was later asked to accept a copy of the report they have rejected it stating foul play.
Still many questions arise as the speed of the report was a breakthrough in post mortem history. Usually it takes 24 hours for a post mortem report to be completed. And as the government has been defiant in this case at the last moment also they have shown that they could never be trusted.
In a time of allegation against the police this means the government’s propaganda machine will be working tireless the rest of the days blaming MDP for the pin pointing. But the family of the deceased says that they have always suspected that the police tortured him till he was knocked unconscious and then dumped him in the sea. So, the cause of death may be ‘drowning’ but there will be other results from this autopsy.

A Sri Lankan lawyer representing the family of late Hussain Solah has said that the findings of Colombo’s Consultant Judicial Medical Officer on the postmortem examination conducted on Solah’s body were “contradictory and inexplicable.”
“A CT scan on the body of Solah was done at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Male on 15 April soon after the discovery of his body and the subsequent statements issued by Maldives police to the media confirm that there was a fracture of the sinus bone and several injuries to the head.
“Unfortunately, the findings of the JMO (Dr. De Alwis) state that there were no injuries to the bones which is contradictory and inexplicable,” Sri Lankan attorney Anil Silva said in a statement released on behalf of Solah’s family. Read more from…

i am not surprised to see this report unlike many maldivians a strange thing, as we maldivians live there and never paid VISA instead we put USD 10.00 when we depart, in passport, so in srilanka anything is possible with some cash.
I belive that after agreeing on conducting the post-mortem even if you like or dislike the result(prelemenary and final) should be accepted. After all you were the parties who watned to conduct the post-mortem overseas, if otherwise we’d have gopt the opportunity to seek and (intervene) barrister the labortary evry now and then and made it impossible to conduct it!
i am not suprise to see such post mortem report. as per my think the body should not be taken to to sri lanke becase such report can be made in IGMH hospital. even the report says its an drowning. maldivian police have to answer lots of qustion of the maldivians. this is the first case i ever hard that in 24 hours a crime of drug has been relase .

This is not the first time this regime murdered its citiznes. Its a series that has been going on for the last 28 years. Different people felt it in different tones and at different stages of life. The whole nation was and is still under one person’s control in a way he wanted in all aspects of life in the tiny nation. It starts from the childhood. Kids are brought up in schools, with precise tactics that would teach them to obey so called “verin” (leaders) which subconciously reminds everyone of its leader alone. The brains were washed and no one dares to think of their own rights. Infact this idea never exists in the minds of Maldivians.
We are now in a time where some people learned to come out of this shell and speak about these issues. At the same time, the leaders are in a position not to leave their seats and comfront the reality. They are scared of the consequences.
The murder of Solah is one of its obstacles and another murder mysteriously taken place while the servants of the Maldivian leader were trying to hide their struggle for survival. The autopsy has no value and the truth is again hidden.
Conducting or forcing to conduct these autopys’ wont help but some people should have some courage to come out and thrown this regime. There is no other soulution.

i didnt want to believe that the police would kill a person. i support the government and i sincerely want to believe they are good people. but in this particular situation, i have found many reasons to doubt the police coz of the way they have handled the situation. they havent been able to stick with one story twice. one question that come to mind is, why didnt they immediately release a video of salah leaving the police premises? they have cameras on each exit and such a video could have been released within minutes time. next big question is, why did they open the sealed report in absecne of the family members? that makes me lose faith in the police coz that report could have been tampered with. many other discrepencies make me belive there was a lot of coverup on the side of the government.

This postmortem is a joke. He was arrested on 9th April and till the time of his death he was under police custody. There are eywitnesses who saw police beating him in the detension centre. There is no way police can escape from this fact. Police cannot show concrete proof of his release. So police must be responsible for his death and I urge to carryout an independent investigation.
How did this happen? Who’s to blam , Certainly there are those who are more responsible than others,,, and one day all of them who has killed Salah will be accountable. I too believe that the postmortem report is short and less information. But we should all note that it is just a pre-summary-report. The only one way that we can say its a police murder (let whoever killed him) is that if it shows clear legal evidence against Police. It has shown such evidence.
We can wait for a full report (including the time of murder), so that if it has any clue.? I am interested in knowing how he is dead, not who killed him?!

In my opinion the goverment has to take full responsibility in this case. my first question is why the police was released him as he was drug user, drug seller and a thief. many sources said that the victim is a person who has courages to do anything bottomline is he has been disturbed to police in addu during anti-goverment events. The most amazing thing is the police is failed to disclose the clear fact about him to the general public at the preliminiary stage after corpse found on the floating water means that there is a hidden agenda in this. Another question is why Mr.Maumoon incidently flown to Singapore this may mean that he knew the case well in advance. Post mortem is nothing to do this proven case you may find another source or way religouly to get to know who has done this.
This autopsy report is a bit too general. Even preliminary reports should be quite detailed as only the toxicology repors are pending. I doubt this is genuine.

Yeah! there are a lot of issues about the post mortem report.
1. Too Short and Summarised
2. IGMH Doctors confirmed that some damages visible at his face, esp:nose, Post mortem report did showed it but the cause mentioned is: being sustained in water!(can a nose bone be broken for that cause)
3. It has been 6 days from his death (a lotta time) i cant imaging how his body would be at the current moment!
Further issues I consider are:
1. Why did the cemetry workers tried so hard to protect his body?
2. Why his body was floating on surface? (it takes minimum 72 hours to float)
3. Why did his body became “fossi” so quickly?

It’s difficult to digest this preliminary report, because I believe the points are formatted in such a way to nullify the suspicions of the public. Every point sounds as if from a layman, who wants to put an end to the controversy. All of us know that it’s a common thing for Post Mortem reports to be manipulated especially if it’s related to politics. Okay, okay let’s close our brains and believe for a moment that he simply drowned to death, but what about eye witness reports of his torture, the claims that Police tampered with some paperwork to project to teh public that he was released on the 13th of April. I think there some good points on DO about the tampering, like the missing lines, the absence of a date, the additional lines and why the Police is refusing to publish the names of those who had conatc twith him after he was released?

The report is a fake.
Drowned victims have water in the lungs. The report says ’sand’ inside proves that he drowned. He may have drowned in QUICKSAND. Unfortunately he was fished out of Male’ harbor with head and internal injuries to which Golhaa Police confirmed to the following.
1. He has severe head injuries. A crack at synas cavity proved he died of head injuries.
2. The doctors in Male’ confirmed that with X-rays and CT scans.
These reports and documents are still there. How come Lanka came out with a fake report which a child can prove wrong?? How many millions was paid???

Shame!!! The family of Salah shud have sent his body for autopsy to somewhere other than Srilanka. You shud expect foul play in such things for money in countries like Srilanka, Iraq, Afghanistan or in Somalia as they are struggling to survive at any cost due to on going wars in those places. It was a planned murder. The order came from Commissioner of Police and some of his senior officers planned it. The order was carried out by some junior staffs of us. Some of them declined to carry it out but later on agreed when Commissioner of Police personaly called them and promised to pay them a hefty sum.
The amount each of them got is not less than MRF 25,000 (I can’t tell you the actual amount as it was paid to them in cash by Deputy Commissioner of Police). The amount paid was not even in the records of Finance Department!
I am NOT writing the actual reason why Commissioner of Police wanted to kill him as it was told to only a handful of Officers and i fear for my safety. I am sure it was not a order came to Commissioner from Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. Hussain Salah’s death sparked protests in the Maldives
An independent autopsy in Sri Lanka has found no sign of torture on the body of a Maldives opposition supporter whose death sparked protests.
Hussain Salah’s body was found near the capital, Male, a week ago.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said Mr Salah had been killed in police custody.
The procedure was carried out in Sri Lanka at the request of the dead man’s family. The preliminary report showed that the cause of death was drowning.
Physical violence was ruled out.
‘Not satisfied’
The government of the Maldives says the autopsy proves that Mr Salah was not killed by the police, as the opposition has been maintaining for a week.

The MDP says it is not satisfied by the investigations - saying the sequence of events that led up to the drowning has not been established.
The opposition and the government are at loggerheads in the Maldives where political parties have been allowed only since 2005.
The MDP accuses President Mamoun Abdul Gayoom, in office since 1978, of dragging his feet on reforms in an attempt to hold on to power.

Can’t he be drawned inside the Atholhuvehi (jail)? In a big tank or something like that with sea water and sand on it’s bottom? All needed is 2 to 4 men who can hold him on the bottom till he suffocates and breathe water with the sand till his lungs and respiratory sytem is fully filled with sand and water. (sea water and sand: this can be brought easily from the shore which is less than 50 feets away from Atholhuvehi)

Police Commissioner Adam Zahir ordered to kill Solah because Prediednt Maumoon Abdul Gayoom asked him to do so. Gayoom went to Singapore after giving this order. While they are hiding behind the junior officers are to be blamed. Thats how things work in the Maldives Police Service.

But given that Salah has suffered serious injuires, anybody would agree that someone might really drown if you beat him like hell, and throw into the sea, perhaps in unconcious state! On an interview to the TVM, a police guy told they took Solah into custody coz they suspect him of using drugs, they havent found any drugs frm Solah but they found drugs frm that ‘area’ where Sola was. It doesnt sense to me at all.
This is a message to the Police guys who killed Solah:
‘U are also Maldivian like me and so was Solah. I dont know why u killed Solah. But u must be knowing it. U cannot kill Solah coz he use drugs or coz he threw stone at the President’s luxury car. There are enough reasons to believe that Solah’s murder has been associated with brutal physical violence and it was done by none other than the Police.
Firstly, the question still remains on the fact that Solah being brought from Addu by the Police on a drug traficking offence be released in a day. Anyone who had had an encounter at Police would not believe that such suspects would be released so fast.
The statements made by Police at various occassions do not tally eace other and in fact some of them are just absurd. Mr. Naveen on TV claimed that their ‘computer system’ could not be ‘manipulated’. At this day in 2007, there cant be any such system which cannot be manipulated or insert false information if someone of the that expertise wishes to.
I wonder, had statements of detainees present at Atholhu vehi at the time Solah was interrogated be taken would constitute enough and ample evidence of inflicting violent acts on Solah. Surely, Solah’s lawyers are smart enough they would have already collected all such circumstantial evidences.
With all these evidences and many many more others, and, the fact that no Sri Lankan Authority has the power to disobey a frim request of the Sri Lankan Government, and the suspicion that the aftermath of this incident is highly political, and, having analysed the moves of Maumoon and his so called advisers under these circumstances I have no reason to believe the Government of the Maldives would not request the Srilankan Government for assistance claiming that this incident is of ‘national security’, and, had the Maldivian Government did so the Sri Lankan Government would NOT reject it.
We the citizens are yet to learn the extent to which Maumoon would exercise his brutal acts had his power is challenged. More of the Solahs and Evan Naseems are yet to be seen.
May Allah free us citizens from the brutal and evil acts of Maumoon and his clans.

My colleagues and I have been watching Maldives closely for quite sometime, the inside dirty work in the politics is just beyond human acceptance. It has been a well known fact that all sorts of illegal actvities are being carried out on a daily basis by the politicians and their supporters. Drugs,money laundering, abuse of innocent Maldivians as soon as they show any signs of political rejection, torture in prison, Manipulating International Aids given to all Maldivians for country’s development schemes, you name it, this tiny country is among the top list of dictatorship and the crimes they are commiting which is unacceptable under al the laws of the human rights ,it is very obvious this is a similar incident of a brutal torture & killing which took place 3 years ago.
