Celebrating the mutilation of a human being

By Hilath Rasheed, 8 December 2006, Male’

It was the day after the academic year was over, and while I was walking on Majeedee Magu that evening, a party at a home in full swing reminded me how every time this year, I am treated to this same horror scene if I remain in the capital.

I can’t understand what there is to be happy about, or a reason to celebrate, when a child who is not yet 10 years old, is mutilated, and all his family and friends want to party all night at his, the victim’s, expense.

I remember my own circumcision experience if not vividly quite painfully and it is something that I want no child of mine to ever have to experience.

I must have been around 6 or 7. We had an open air shower, the gifili or valhu kotari, where I was kept on a wooden table. I remember male extended family members all surrounding me, and someone was restraining my legs. My father was just next to me but I am not sure whether he was holding me but he told me that if I “just concentrate on something else, there would be no pain.”

I tried to take his advice, and my mind wandered to the first picnic I had on Kuda Bandos island; it was a special experience because it was the first time I traveled out of the concrete blocks that is Male to a natural island with green vegetation, clear blue water – and my first touch with a red Dhanbaa, my distant cousin who still inhabit the warm shallow waters of our archipelago and have no need to evolve to come onto land.

I don’t exactly remember whether it was painful or not but I was feeling as if I was a wild animal, brought under control, and then mutilated because for some misbehavior that I must have committed that I was yet to understand.

Worse, my father was wearing dark sunglasses, and somehow I could see a certain Hameed (who later worked in the Department of Health) as he performed my circumcision. (I still remember this guy who must now be in his late 40s or early 50s and each sighting of him still causes me pain). The visions I cannot remember in detail: reflected from my father’s sunglasses, I saw tools and hands at work around my genitals. Weird may not be the correct word to describe what I was feeling but let that be adequate for now.

I remember the first time I peed that day: I wasn’t expecting it and therefore, when it came, it was the most excruciating pain I had ever felt. I did not want to pee again, and tried to hold back, but had to a few times that day. Reminiscing this pain again as I write this article, I know how much inner strength I have to summon every time I remember how I have now forgiven all the personal “atrocities” my family caused against me due to family, social or religious pressure.

When after a week it was finally over, and they removed the clothing which covered the glans, what a surprise and shock it gave me to finally see an alienish head poking out. I remember that I had great difficulty in coming to terms with this “alien organ” in my body, and even though religious authorities who propagate circumcision claim that the foreskin is removed to lessen sexual stimulation, erotic tendencies and a tendency towards indulging in masturbation, my personal experience is that this experience actually opened my innocent eyes towards the world of sexuality (previously, I thought the function of the penis was only for peeing and nothing else). Of course, physically it won’t now give me the same pleasure as an uncut or intact man because I am circumcised. There are surgeries to restore your foreskin but well, I am now 31, not a teenager any more, so sex is not much of a priority in comparison to company, communication, entertainment and creativity.

Is circumcision a must under Islam?

If you study history, circumcision was a practice practised thousands of years ago by pagans and although Islam explicitly is against acts or culture belonging to the “Jaahiliyyaa Zamaan” (The Age of Darkness or Non-Enlightenment), I am surprised how this got into our culture and why this culture is so highly regarded even among Maldivians.

There is a whole lot of debate going on about this topic in the world, with many websites dedicated to the debate. My own opinion is that if men are born uncut, then that’s the way nature meant it to be, and if we mutilate that, there must at least be an imbalance and upsetting of the natural way of life because our universe is an intricate and balanced system.

According to Mothers Against Circumcision Organisation: “People mistakenly believe the circumcised penis is cleaner. The myth that the penis with a foreskin is difficult to clean is exactly that — a myth. Cleaning is so simple, it’s amazing that people fret so much about it. The big hoopla over hygiene is pure and unnecessary paranoia. There are many benefits to keeping the foreskin intact. Typically, American doctors have limited knowledge in these areas. Many are totally unaware that the foreskin actually requires no special care.

“Quite a number of famous child care experts and doctors recommend against circumcision in their books. Dr. Dean Edell has expressed opposition against infant circumcision for at least 15 years now. Sheila Kitzinger very emphatically recommends that parents leave their sons intact. Dr. Lendon Smith goes into detail explaining the foreskin’s purposes and giving all the reasons why circumcision should not be performed. Dr. Spock, in his most recent book, stated “I feel that there’s no solid medical evidence at this time to support routine circumcision.” He recommends “leaving the foreskin the way Nature meant it to be.”

My parents circumsized me. I think it affected me in psychological way. I amsure I would be a different person, more sure of myself if it did not happen. I know they still secretly do it to young girls.

new scientist has an article on circumsision and sex life.

it is now proven that it takes away a whole load of male sexual experience.

Hmm. Aniya questioned the buruga. Hilath questioned circumcision. People see both as fundamental to their beliefs. Publish the latter in a newspaper/magazine and the nation will be ignited yet again and there’d be death threats to Hilath too.

And… very cheeky of you to surface the matter on ya blog without actually saying anything ;)

The natural function of the male and female prepuce is to protect, with anti viral defence Langerhans’s cells concentrated in the prepuce, that produce langerin proteins that kill HIV, and to enhance sexual desire, with meissner’s corpuscles, concentrared in the prepuce, that send neuro- chemical signals to the reproduction parts of the brain. Known as the male “Gee String” or the female “G” spot, the prepucial frenular delta nerves trigger sexual arrousal when pulled or stroked. Severing these nerves during routine neonatal circumcision, short circuits normal function leading to disuse atrophy of the corresponding brain chemistry resulting after puberty. Not all circumcisions cut these nerves leading to several types of long term side effects from having the malechild sexually altered. Choosing which child will be caused to become sexually dysfunctional is a form of eugenics. Some masculine god worshiping cults have taken up eugenics to controle the adverve side effect caused from putting a god’s needs before the childs.
Neurologists have figured out the link between delayed PTSD, surfacing after puberty, as suicidal depression, erectile dysfunction, and paranoid dilussional schizophrenia, and neonatal traumas, including surgery, infections, toxins, and rape.
Science is up against 6,000 years of religious conviction. These people cannot give up circumcision because it means they would be admitting to worshiping a false god, as circumcision is the cornerstone of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. How are we going to prove that Abraham and Mohammad, and Jesus were suffering from circumcision induced schizophrenia, with visual and audio hallucinations noted in scripture?
All the 9/11 suicide bombers were circumcised most likely before puberty. They showed signs of subconscious desires to take revenge in the form of the ultimate crime against Mother Nature, our creator, murder/ suicide.

    Thanks for sharing this.

With respect to Islam, I would point out that the Qur’an does not call for circumcision, The Prophet was not circumcised, and the Qur’an DOES say several times and ways that the human body is designed and made perfect by Allah.

Regardless of whether one feels it should be chosen by the faiuthful, there is no justification for forcing an amputation on someone else.

though normally i quite like your articles, i have to admit this once i am not in agreement with you.
Very recently there has been some studies done that show, that infact circumcizing lessens a man’s chance of contracting AIDS, and as such they (meaning the relevant heath authorities) are just about to embark on a promotion of this painful procedure for african men.
However i completely agree that it must be damn painful, and nothing to party about. as a women i can only imagine the pain you guys must feel ;)
anyway should i get a male child, i will definetly get this done, however will find the least painful way of getting it done without all that stupid partying. keeping religion aside, the latest studies show that circumcization is beneficial from a health perspective also unfortunately for you guys.

As healthcare is moving towards evidence based practice (what does the best evidence tells us to tackle a problem)these days , we should see what the reviews are saying. This is a list of research articles on this topic.

Siegfried et al.. concludes by saying that “Despite the positive results of a number of observational studies, there are not yet sufficient grounds to conclude that male circumcision, as a preventive strategy for HIV infection, does more good than harm. The results of current ongoing RCTs will need to be carefully considered before circumcision is implemented as a public health intervention for prevention of sexually transmitted HIV.”

And above is the LATEST research i found.

If anyone want a list of the research that is being carried out i will see what i can find. In the mean time those who have access to the cochrane library can enjoy reading those articles. ;)

.. interesting facts and prrof u have shown there…from what i learnt, our religion encourages circumcision of men to moderate his sexual desires and for hygiene purposes……circumcision of women is also a must in our religion.. and luckily v get circumcised just aftr birth… so v dont realy remember much about it..does ur research say anything about women circumcision?

  12. maldiveshealth Says:

Heaps.. Fathun.. what do you want to know about female circumcision?

In short it is cruel inhumane and a traditional rather than a religious (islamic) ritual. No where in Quran, as far as i know talk about female circumcision. It is carried out by the African Tribes to protect their women from having sex before marriage. They actually stitch the opening to such extent that only a pencil wide opening is left for menstrual reasons. Now a days these practices is being followed by all over the world in the name of Islam and other religions.

There are two major types of female circumcision carried out. That is if we look at it in a medical or health point of view.

There are these symbolc types and harmful types. As far as i am aware of you are mentioning about the symbolic type that is being carried out in Maldives just after birth where with a hep of pin blood is shown.

With radical and extremist religious views i heard that the harmful types are on the increase where part of the outer lining is removed and the clitoris is removed.

I am writing a post on female circumcision and very soon you all will be able to read it. Stay tuned.

  13. Hilath Rasheed Says:

Aicha, great thanks for the comments. I have also gone through certain studies, and a recent article by AFP which said that the UN approved circumcision as a measure against AIDS is now disputed; researchers have criticised the African studies because of the way it was conducted. Other researches have said that another (African I think) study was carried out only on bus drivers on long routes who have casual sexual encounters and that this was not enough evidence to generalise. Based on current scientific evidence, and if we as right thinking people understand that creatures have evolved according to the way it should be, I am strongly against circumcision of both men and women, and am vehemently against all forms of mutilation or cruelty carried against all creatures.
