It is because of people like you this problem is escalating day by day.
We need to look at the problem with compassion and care. We need to learn to listen.
Decriminalising is NOT the same as implementing a Medical Model. I am all for Decriminalising, but totally AGAINST a Medical model. I do not believe that addiciton is a disease, rather that it is a psychosocial probelm, if it makes you happy then a biopsychosocial problem.
Substance abusers, have to take responsibility for their action some point in their life, otherwise there is no getting out of it. You can’t give medication and expect them to get cured! that would only take care of the mental addiction, what of the physical addiction and the behaviour of the addict?
Also prohibition doesn’t work. Maldives is a good example, if you want a well established example, take a look at the US and their Drug Wars!
I say go for Decriminalisation, with proper treatment centers and community support programs. Tackle the social stigma and establish a working relationship with the general community.
I will call it a mental health problem. And a system is needed which will treat all drug addicts under the umbrella of a mental health treatment and care system.
The question is do we have a proper mental health law? Do we have enough qualified personell (not a problem even if we do not have in adequate amounts.. with proper management i think we can solve this in 2-3 years time)?
If we look at it as a mental health problem.. we can change peoples thinking towards drugs and drug addicts..tackle the stigma issue…thro a system which will educate treat and rehabilitate. We need a system in place. With the current system and health care model..this is unachievable.
