dear author of maldiveslive, why don’t you ring up care society, ask for Aaifya or her email and send it across to her instead of publishing this again on your blog….?

I am writing to ask for information:

I am currently living outside of the Maldives. I got news from Addu that a young man who was undergoing police/MNDF training had a near drowning experience last week.

The story that I heard was that the young man, reported as Ismail, was with “police” trainers out in the sea, learning swimming. He apparently knew how to swim a bit. He among others were forced to continue swimming for prolonged period of time because the “police” trainers would not allow him to get on or hold on to the boat. They repeatedly pushed him off the boat, kicked his hands when he held the side of the boat and at one stage even forced his head under water and held him down.

The young man was taken to S. Hithadhoo Regional Hospital sometime after the incident in a critical condition having inhaled/aspirated sea water into his lungs. He required mechanical assistance to breathe and was in a critical condition.

His family was informed, but the information was that he had accidentally drowned! And on top of that; the police story was that it was the heroics of the “police” trainers that saved his life. All a lot of crap. The young man was ragged during the swimming training and held under water BY the “police” trainers.

The latest bit of news I got from Addu is that the young man is improving. He is apparently off mechanical respiratory support and out of danger. His doctors are confident that he would be well enough to leave the hospital in a few days.

However, there is grave concern for the mental health of young Ismail. The staff at the hospital note that Ismail has terrible nightmares and has severe post-traumatic stress disorder signs. He is likely to need psychiatric help for sometime to get over this terrifying ordeal.

I am deeply concerned that the Maldivian media has not reported this news. The people need to know more about this incident. I believe those responsible should be made accountable.

I request readers to report ANY information they may have relating to this case.

    Hi,
Im just wondering, if you are so passionate about health and autism as the blog suggests it would have been appropriate to contact Ms Afiya rather than posting this here. This email was personally meant for her and its weird that the whole letter shud be on a blog…some one is communicating with you…sounds so lame….

I did the appropriate thing. :)

  11. siadh Says:

I have just spoken to a man who claims that his son was slapped on the face while admitted at IGMH, he specifically said Bed No.55 Pediatric ward, 6 months or so ago by Dr Eshwaran!!!

His child, who was admitted for psychiatric problems, had apparently got Dr Eshawaran angry by being “naughty”.

He tells me that he complained to Dr Fathmath Didi. Nothing happened. He said that 2 maldivian doctors also made complaints (rings a bell doesn’t it) about case.

He went on to tell me that he met a lawyer who refused to help him saying that Eshwaran was well protected because of his connections with Police/MNDF.
