An Idea that has been going on for some time

Posted by: maldiveshealth on: February 27, 2008

Why not make a network among the parents whose children have been disabled due to negligence, from the mistreatment and malpractice. May be the NGOs can lead this initiative. NGOs like Care Society can do this as they claim they are there for the vulnerable and as an advocate for the disabled.
This network can be used as a way to find courage and strength from each other. A way to dig up the injustices that has been done. This network can, as a collective effort, SUE the people and the hospitals who have been responsible and has gotten away so far. When i think of such an initiative, Erin Brockovich comes to my mind.
WHAT IS LACKING IS LEADERSHIP.
It was yesterday that a Cerebral Palsy child was awarded 5.4 million pounds in compensation due to negligence and malpractice.

Thats an idea,
BUT
what about forming such a group, so that members can support each other and help each other to heal and move on with their lives???

Sometimes healing doesn’t come easy unless some sort of justice happens.

Parents Network is a very good idea.

What better example for inspiration can there be than ‘Brokovich’, the best seller story and award winning film on the real life story of how Erin Brokovich fought the might of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company for contaminating drinking water and won the $333 million, the largest settlement ever paid in a direct action lawsuit in U.S. history.

This story shows how big corporations engage in dubious practises to maximise their profit even when they know their tactics are detrimental to the society. This is a brilliant story of the power of one person. Everyone should watch.

You mentioned about missing leadership. Traditional leadership always been based on power, it means the power of personality to dominate a group. It is only recently that knowledge-based leadership has come about and there is greater opportunity for Maldives to use this concept to regroup and empower and bring about the necessary changes. Brokovich demostrates how individuals can take on the injustices of the mighty. We need to learn and cultivate this quality.

There is a WHO initiative called “Patients for Patient safety” that has similar scope. Last year around September there was WHO meeting in Indonesia attended by Maldivians that discussed similar NGO or Action Group strategies.

Unfortunately the people who represented Maldives were an entirely different group. Dr Yasir from IGMH (representing Maldives Medical Council), Dr Ashraf (representing Maldivian Medical Association), Aminath Firaq (Representing Maldivian Nurses Association) and 2 kids with Thalassemia. In my humble opinion these were the wrong people! And to prove that point shall we ask if they have carried out any activities as follow-up?

I think anyone wishing to initiate such an action group or NGO should approach this WHO group for guidance.

I agree with Hilmy on empowerment rather than “power” leadership.

The medical watch group has started a movement that could have been more refined, professional and transparent in making some difference. Their tactics are questionable, intent unknown and very amateur. They are making an impact. Not the desired one unfortunately.

A similar more open and less accusatory approach may help. The participatory approach they have used has people squabbling over rubbish rather than a useful discussion.

Participatory approach is good. I think MMW is doing great. Bottle up emotions will go loose . I say Let it loose.
