When asked whether one would lose his citizenship upon his conversion to another faith, the deputy minister said, “yes, that was the near-unanimous decision of the constituent assembly when this provision was being discussed.”
From here.
So many will automatically become stateless. *wondering how many*
and can these stateless people get citizenship in a more tolerant haven based on this reason alone? i wish…
There must be a way.

Consequences of being stateless are many. Just a few…
People may not be able to vote or get married.
People may not be able to travel across state borders.
People may be deprived of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights such as education, basic health care and legal employment.
People may be unable to own property.
People can be detained for the simple fact that they are stateless.
People may be impoverished and vulnerable (eg potentially resulting in poor working environments, inability to lodge police complaints after crimes).
And Maldivian government talks about human rights and this new constitution supposedly has a chapter on human rights where a special emphasis is given to human rights.
Yeah… Yeah.. Kiss my fat ass.
Does anyone know if Maldives signed this convention?
The Convention Relating to the status of Stateless persons.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Convention_Relating_to_the_Status_of_Stateless_Persons
The sad fact is that it has become fashionable for some of todays maldivian youth to claim rejection of their religious believes and conversion to christianity ,other faiths or rejection of the whole idea of religion and god, ie being atheists
Dont knw how that sick idea got into their heads while todyas modern world seeks the TRUTH!!
May allah forgive all our sins of heart ,words and actions.
Ameen
kalla,
Those youth you claim of rejection of their religious believes and conversion to christianity ,other faiths or rejection of the whole idea of religion and god, ie being atheists, they are children of modern world who are seeking the TRUTH..
may they discover the truth for the truth shall set them free..
See, thats exactly wat i was saying..
you have proven the point. clearly i can see the mindset of youth that I described earlier from your post.
sadder fact ignored by kalla and subject of the original post: non-Muslim Maldivians are stateless and intolerance of religious freedom by the constitution.
If that’s modernity I’d rather stay in the Dark Ages, thankyou.
Badi: The document http://www.unhcr.org/protect/PROTECTION/3bbb0abc7.pdf lists all the parties signatory to that convention. Maldives is NOT listed.
I m glad Maldivesis not listed . Because I would not want to see a day when they have temples and churches in the Maldives, as with religious freedom comes the right to practice freely too.
I wish religious education is given the right way instead of promoting the two extreme ends of road of faith.
glad of intolerance? how very modern and accepting of you.
I am totally against those who will not tolerate other religions.
Maldivians should be allowed to build temples and churches and monasteries. They should be allowed to worship anything they want.
@CP: Hear, hear. They should be free even if its a genocidal megalomaniac moon-god-remnant called Allah. Or a teapot.
Subhana allah!!
I guess I m in a wrong plateform viewing my opinions.
Didnt realise some of who post here are so blinded with utmost form of sin. kuruf
May allah forgive me if I said anything wrong and forgive our sins and help us all see the right path.
Ameen.
Allah know the best.
(NB, for the blogger, sorry this wiil be my last post and sorry for posting out of topic)
Horrified of blasphemy yet happy to strip people of their rights. Typical.
Some like chocolate, some like vanilla, some strawberry. Others dont eat dairy. Its a personal choice. Respect and tolerate.
